KBYS is a non-commercial community/college radio station broadcasting from the McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana. An acoustical study was conducted for all three studios in the radio station. Measurements were carried out on reverberation time, background noise, and sound insulation. All three studios are equipped with acoustical ceiling tiles along with sound absorbing foams on the walls in order to achieve satisfactory reverberation times. The background noise levels were evaluated using both the overall A-weighted sound pressure levels and noise criteria (NC) curves. It was discovered that the network switch contributes the most background noise. The unit was then replaced by a less noisy switch and the background noise is significantly reduced to an acceptable level.
