FORMATION OF SHOCK-LIKE STRUCTURES IN THE SOUND FIELD OF A MACH 3 JET

The formation of shock-like structures associated with the perception of crackle noise is investigated in the sound field of a cold Mach 3 jet. The flow and very near acoustic fields are obtained by solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations by Large-Eddy Simulation, and its far acoustic field is determined by solving the linear or the weakly nonlinear Euler equations using low-dissipation and low-dispersion finite difference schemes. For a linear sound propagation, steepened shock-like structures are found in the far acoustic field, which indicates that they are formed within the jet flow. For a nonlinear propagation, a further steepening of the waves is observed, leading to the formation of N-shaped waves in the far field. As a result, the pressure fluctuations spectra contain more high-frequency components than in the linear case and the skewness factor of the pressure time-derivative increases.
