Vibration and shock control in historical stone masonry buildings is a fundamental requirement for safety and preservation, since several source of vibrations, such as heavy car/tramway traffic, is nowadays increasing in historical centers. Criteria for the evaluation of vibrations and the assessment of their effects on buildings are collected in several Standards, regarding both structural/architectural damages and comfort for inhabitants. Nevertheless the mechanical behavior of stone masonries with respect to vibrations transmission and its mitigation is not well addressed. In this paper a brief description of the basic phenomena are presented, as well as illustrative experimental evidences, based on laboratory tests, of out-of-plane induced vibrations on stone masonry blocks jointed with performing cement mortars.
