OBJECTIVE SOUND QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF HEARING AIDS BASED ON FRACTAL THEORY

A valid objective assessment of hearing aids sound quality is highly desirable. In this paper, new metrics based on fractal theory for objective sound quality assessment of hearing aids is put forward. Basic box-counting analyses are first introduced, including classical box-counting method, differential box counting (DBC) method. Then, the two methods are applied to speech signal frames. Voices activity detection are analyzed to delete the silent period between voices, and the average fractal dimensions of active voice segments are obtained to represent the overall sound quality metric. Different noise levels are added to verify the robustness of the metrics. Finally, the subjective evaluations are conducted on Hint System in hospital. And the proposed fractal dimensions based objective metrics are compared to traditional SNR, LLR, or WSS metrics. The comparison result shows that the fractal theory based metric has higher correlation with subjective score.
