EVALUATION OF THE BONDING QUALITY IN A METAL COMPOSITE STRUCTURE USING LAMB WAVES

This work presents numerical and experimental results on the evaluation of the bonding quality in a metal-adhesive-composite structure using Lamb guided waves. We observe the behavior of Lamb modes in different samples by modifying the interface substrate-adhesive quality, and also in the presence of delamination at only one interface while the other interface is well bonded. An experimental study, based on wave generation by a piezocomposite transducer and laser vibrometer reception, is carried out. An interphase rheological model is solved by finite elements method, using Comsol Multiphysics®, to obtain dispersion curves as function of the quality of the bonding. The comparison of between experimental and numerical results permits to classify different levels of adhesion. Moreover, results show that in case of delamination, it is possible to distinguish which interface (metal/adhesive or composite/adhesive) is delaminated.
