The Athens International Airport (A.I.A), one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Greece, under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change and the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, has completed the necessary studies for Strategic Noise Map (SNM), including Noise Action Plans (NAP) – according to the European Directive 49/2002 (ED 2002/49, 2002)- for all 3 rounds e.g. 2007, 2012 and 2017, based on accurate yearly traffic and flight path data and introducing a comprehensive set of Noise Abatement tools and operating restriction measures to address noise problems including also withdrawal of marginally compliant aircraft. This paper evaluates all noise action measures put in place in order to access that A.I.A is in fully compliance with the REGULATION (EU) No 598/2014 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL regarding the establishment of all relative rules and procedures with regard to the introduction of noise-related operating restrictions within a Balanced Approach. The noise abatement objective for A.I.A. is the best combination of measures regarding both noise abatement operational procedures, land use planning and management, operating restriction for the 3R runway within a cost effective Balanced Approach, in in order to achieve the environmental noise abatement objectives set for A.I.A according to the relevant Greek legislation framework.
